Outlook problem with first launch after booting

Hi..

i'm having a weird problem with Outlook 2007 on XP Pro SP2 and would
appreciate some advice please.

When I boot up my PC and launch Outlook, i'm unable to do anything.
Everywhere I try to click just results in a ding sound. If I check Task
Manager there doesn't seem to be any problems; Outlook is not using up any
CPU or large amounts of RAM and according to the applications tab, it is
still running, so it doesn't enter a non-responsive state at any point.

If I open another instance of Outlook, the second one works ok whilst the
first one continues to have problems or if I close the application in Task
Manager and relaunch it, it works fine too.

I have tried running Outlook without extensions but the same thing happens
for the initial launch after booting.

I have tried deleting my profile, pst files and setting all the accounts up
from scratch but it hasn't fixed the problem either.

I thought it may be related to WindowBlinds so I added Outlook to the list
of applications not to be skinned but that didn't make any difference....plus
it doesn't happen on my partner's profile and she uses the same WindowBlinds
theme as me.

Not really sure what else to try so any suggestions would be cool.

Thanks..

Nick :)

p.s - I dual boot with Vista too and have no problems using Outlook on Vista
and both installations use the same addons.

Sounds like there is an error window or another type of window that opens with the first instance of Outlook. Try minimizing the first instance when you open it and get the ding sound. See if there is a window that is opening behind the main Outlook window.

Hi Milly,

thank you for the reply.

I tried your suggestion and after minimizing Outlook, I couldn't see any
error dialogue windows/popups so i'm still none the wiser :)

However, I have found an entry in the Event Log which looks like it may be
connected with the problem:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Outlook
Event Category: None
Event ID: 30
Date: 21/01/2008
Time: 23:03:02
User: N/A
Computer: ******-PC
Description:
The store C:\Documents and Settings\****\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is being reconciled with the indexer for
the following reason: Non-matching max change numbers.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I did a little research and found the following site:
http://www.eventid.net/displayqueue.asp?eventid=30

Which states:
Hapened after upgrade to Office 2007 (from Office 2003) on XP SP2. The
problem occurs when starting Oulook for the first time. Logging off and then
on resolves the issue temporaily but it returns after the next warm or cold
boot.

Does any of that make any sense to you or would you know of any possible
fixes for that please?

Thanks..

Nick :)

No need to keep posting the same message within minutes of each other.

A fellow MVP (Exchange MVP) just had the exact same problem and the only way he could find to fix it was to delete and recreate the email account and then create a new .pst file and copy the items (do NOT import) from the old to the new.

Apologies for the multiple posts...usually when i click to post, it takes me
to a new page to confirm my email address for email notification but it
didn't happen so I assumed the post failed but I should've just been a bit
patient and checked back later.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion...I will give it a try :)

|| A fellow MVP (Exchange MVP) just had the exact same problem and the
|| only way he could find to fix it was to delete and recreate the
|| email account and then create a new .pst file and copy the items (do
|| NOT import) from the old to the new.

||
||| Hi Milly,
|||
||| thank you for the reply.
|||
||| I tried your suggestion and after minimizing Outlook, I couldn't see
||| any error dialogue windows/popups so i'm still none the wiser :)
|||
||| However, I have found an entry in the Event Log which looks like it
||| may be connected with the problem:
|||
||| Event Type: Information
||| Event Source: Outlook
||| Event Category: None
||| Event ID: 30
||| Date: 21/01/2008
||| Time: 23:03:02
||| User: N/A
||| Computer: ******-PC
||| Description:
||| The store C:\Documents and Settings\****\Local Settings\Application
||| Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is being reconciled with the
||| indexer for the following reason: Non-matching max change numbers.
|||
||| For more information, see Help and Support Center at
||| http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
|||
||| I did a little research and found the following site:
||| http://www.eventid.net/displayqueue.asp?eventid=30
|||
||| Which states:
||| Hapened after upgrade to Office 2007 (from Office 2003) on XP SP2.
||| The problem occurs when starting Oulook for the first time. Logging
||| off and then on resolves the issue temporaily but it returns after
||| the next warm or cold boot.
|||
||| Does any of that make any sense to you or would you know of any
||| possible fixes for that please?
|||
||| Thanks..
|||
||| Nick :)

|||| Sounds like there is an error window or another type of window that
|||| opens with the first instance of Outlook. Try minimizing the first
|||| instance when you open it and get the ding sound. See if there is
|||| a window that is opening behind the main Outlook window.

||||| Hi..
|||||
||||| i'm having a weird problem with Outlook 2007 on XP Pro SP2 and
||||| would appreciate some advice please.
|||||
||||| When I boot up my PC and launch Outlook, i'm unable to do
||||| anything. Everywhere I try to click just results in a ding sound.
||||| If I check Task Manager there doesn't seem to be any problems;
||||| Outlook is not using up any CPU or large amounts of RAM and
||||| according to the applications tab, it is still running, so it
||||| doesn't enter a non-responsive state at any point.
|||||
||||| If I open another instance of Outlook, the second one works ok
||||| whilst the first one continues to have problems or if I close the
||||| application in Task Manager and relaunch it, it works fine too.
|||||
||||| I have tried running Outlook without extensions but the same thing
||||| happens for the initial launch after booting.
|||||
||||| I have tried deleting my profile, pst files and setting all the
||||| accounts up from scratch but it hasn't fixed the problem either.
|||||
||||| I thought it may be related to WindowBlinds so I added Outlook to
||||| the list of applications not to be skinned but that didn't make
||||| any difference....plus it doesn't happen on my partner's profile
||||| and she uses the same WindowBlinds theme as me.
|||||
||||| Not really sure what else to try so any suggestions would be cool.
|||||
||||| Thanks..
|||||
||||| Nick :)
|||||
||||| p.s - I dual boot with Vista too and have no problems using
||||| Outlook on Vista and both installations use the same addons.
