Outlook taking 90/96% CPU.

I use Windows XP professional, SP2 - Office 2003 professional – Spyware
Doctor that scans incoming and outgoing mail.
For some unknown reason a couple of weeks ago, Office Outlook began to act
up. Every so often, Outlook starts using between 90 and 97% of the CPU
(according to Task Manager). The machine comes to a screeching halt and
nothing can be done. It is not even possible to switch from an application to
another. It stays like that for a few seconds or several minutes.
Would it be possible to get some advice to resolve this most annoying problem?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.
