pdf preview handler

I originally used Ryan Gregg's pdf preview handler. Somehow mine went away
and it is no longer available since it is now a part of the 8.1 adobe reader.
I have 8.1 reader and have tried 9. I still cannot preview a pdf in the
window in Outlook 2007. (I am using windows XP, not vista)

Outlook's trust center has a check next to pdf, yet the screen still tells
me no previewer is available. How do I get Outlook to recognize that I do
have one installed?

does every pdf fail? Do the attachments have an extension?

Yes to both. All are .pdf and none can be previewed. They can be opened,
just not previewed.

Both Reader 8 and 9 should support it, but I use the MSDN preview handler which adds support for pdf and a bunch of other files.

I have the MSDN preview handlers installed also. In the Trust Center I just
checked the box to use those instead of Adobe pdf handler, but still no
previewer is avilable.

I know nothing about code, etc. Beyond clicking the msi in the MSDN Preview
Handlers, am I suppose to do anything more? I read something about
registering them, however I have no idea what this means or how to do it.

the installation should configure everything for you. have you tried
repairing reader? (help menu) or foxit's preview handler?

did you search the registry for 'pdf preview handler for vista' and verify
it's registered? (I have v8 on my system and my entry under shell\muicache
ends with pdfprevhndlr.dll, -101)

Registry says:
Value name: @C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\pdfprevhndlr.dll,-101
Value data: PDF Preview Handler for Vista

I uninstalled and reinstalled Reader 8.1.3 yesterday.

that's what I have installed.

Are you using an admin account or an account with a lower level of

Yes, we are both stumped. I assume the problem is with reader and/or
windows, not outlook, but I'm not 100% sure. It may be as simple as the
preview handler dll needs reregistered, but it seems to be registered.

If using vista, see if the explorer preview works (if its turned off, go to
Organize, layout menu to enable it) - if pdf won't preview in explorer then
its definitely not an outlook problem. Oh, and see if there is anything in
the event viewer that might be a clue.
