problems starting Word on jewel boot pea sea

G

George Orwell

I have two similar PCs.
Word 2000 hangs on one of them (unless you start with /a).
I searched knowledge base for clues, nothing helped.
I also looked at the "Problems opening word" page at word.mvps.org
no cure there either.
Now both of these PCs are dual boot with Win98 + Win2000.
Both have Office 2000 installed under Win2000 on D: partition.
One also has Office 2000 installed under Win98 on C: partition.
This has the problem when trying to run Word in Win2000.
The other with only Office under Win2000 is flawless.
So I am pondering if something is screwed up by the dual boot
situation. Actually, Word used to work until a month ago.
Perhaps my kids accidentally tried to run the Win2000 Word .exe
on D: from Win98 and it screwed something?
Is anybody having troubles with Office under dual boot
installations?

If Word starts using the /a switch, it proves that there is nothing wrong
with Word. It has to be some 'outside' problem. Are you sure you went
through the FAQ thoroughly?

The usual causes of a complete failure to start are absence of a compatible
default local printer driver or a corrupt normal.dot. Have you installed a
local printer driver and set it as Windows default in that boot partition?
But if you follow the FAQ carefully, you should find the problem. Because it
works with the /a switch, dual booting is unlikely to be the problem.
