Problems with Office 2003 file icons in Vista.

Don Pedro

Hi all,

Hope you guys can help me. I have an HP Pavilion laptop running Vist
Home Premium and pre-installed MS Works. Note: Everything is in
Danish version, but it should not make any difference.

I uninstalled MS Works and installed MS Office 2003 (Std. Ed.). Now m
*.doc and *.xls file icons are simply displayed as a diminishe
Word/Excel-logo on a white background, while the *.rtf files ar
displayed using the standard Word 2003 icon.

Also, the *.doc and *.xls files are simply referred to a
“DOC/XLS-file” (and not “Microsoft Office Word/Excel 97 - 200
Document”).

Note that the *.ppt file appears normal (both icon and file typ
description).

“Default Programs” show the various Word file associations as follows:

and this:

and this:

Which (as far as I can tell) all appear to be normal, except for *.do
and *.xls.

I have tried the following already:
1. Uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003 completely.
2. All Vista and Office 2003 updates are installed.
3. Changing the registry in several locations. Interestingly, in th
registry, the value in “DefaultIcon” in “Word.document.8” (ie. Offic
2003) and “Word.RTF.8” both point to “C:\Installer….\wordicon.exe,1”
That is: as far as I can tell, they both point to the same icon (“1”
in wordicon.exe, but the end result is not the same. I have trie
changing the wordicon.exe index value for “word.document.8”, but so fa
to no avail.

The two figures below show the Word 2003 icons available in th
“installer” and “Office” folders, respectively.

I guess overall it is a minor issue (as I can open and edit the file
without problems), but the incorrect appearance of the icons ar
driving me nuts! ;-)

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yours,
Peter

For Word, I would try:

winword.exe /r

to re-register it. I've seen this work when other methods fail. I don't know
if Excel has a /r switch, but that would be worth trying, as well.

Guys,

Thanks. I tried "winword.exe /r", but unfortunately, it didn't help.

Thanks anyway.

Yours,
Pete
