Program Error in Word - invalid dynamic link call to a .DLL file

I recently reconnected my father's computer to the
internet after 1 1/2 years off line and consequently when
I connected, Windows Update had 14 critical updates
including a Windows 98 Service pack that needed to be
loaded. I did all the critial updates and a few non-
critical ones and have also re-subscribed to Norton
antivirus and have been trying to get the computer
upgraded. I am now connected to the internet, I got the
email up and running I've defragmented the hard disk and
have run all kinds of diagnostics on the computer and
everything seemed to be working until I tried to open a
Word document. I tried to open Word and it allows me to
do that, but after several seconds I get a Program Error
message on the screen that reads: Your program is making
an invalid dynamic link call to a .DLL file. There is
also a close button and when you click on it it kicks you
out of Word. I also get this same message whenever I try
to use the printer to print from the internet, my Print
Artist program, a picture I had scanned in and Excel. My
printer is located remotely upstrairs. I had the 2
computers networked together on Saturday and the printer
was able to print the excel file on Saturday. I did all
the updates on Sunday/Monday. HELP!! Now that my
computer is all updated, I can't even type a Word document
and print it. My father also Microsoft Works on the
computer and when I try to open up that program the same
thing happens as on Word. It opens up, I start typing and
a few seconds later I get the program error about the
invalid dynamic link call to a .DLL file. With all the
updates I did, I know the configuration settings have been
changed. I'm hoping you can tell me what I can do to
reset some setting. I'm anxiously awaiting your response.

Hi Judy,

Since you are using Norton AV the first item to rule out is the
"Office Plug-in" option in Norton. It is notorious for causing many
conflicts in the Office applications.

In Norton go to Norton Options and disable the "Office Plug-in" found
in the Miscellaneous section.

HI Beth,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did go out to check the
Norton options and the office plug in was already
disabled. In addition to the word and printing problems I
mentioned, earlier tonight I tried to put a CD in my D
drive to download some screensavers and the same program
error came up: Your porgram is making an invalid dynamic
link call to a .DLL file. My computer seems to be plagued
with this same error. HELP!! I can't seem to use my
computer to type, print or run certain CD's - what good is
it? Any additional suggestions you have would be greatly
appreciated!!

Hi Judy,

It sounds like it could be more of a Windows problem than a Word
problem if the same error is appearing when you use your CD drive. You
might try posting to one of the Windows newsgroups to see if any of
the gurus there are familiar with the error you encountered. Sorry I
couldn't be of more help. :-(
