projector and powerpoint issue!

I was trying to show a Powerpoint quiz on my laptop at our church
tonight and when I plugged in the lead to the projector, it wouldn't
show on the wall.

Do you have to have the computer switched off before plugging in
projector and then switch the laptop on?

The reason I didn't use the church laptop was that I had triggers on the
quiz which raised window boxes on a house to show certain answers. On
the church laptop I have been unable to use triggers on a slide as the
slideshow confuses these with move to next slide.

I hope I haven't rambled on here to boredom stage,

Leonard,
Do you have to have the computer switched off before plugging in projector
and then switch the laptop on?

There is no hard and fast rule to this one.

some laptops will not 'send the signal' out the back, unless something is
plugged in when the laptop is turned on.
some laptops are not fussy, you can plug the cable in anytime.

most laptops have a magic key combination (unique to each laptop) that says
to the laptop 'please direct the output to'

laptop only
external only
both screens

The magic key combination is something like
function (Fn) F5 (or other key on your laptop)
