Prompted for username/password

R

RossCIS86

I am trying to put files on a website so that anyone can access them. I put
hyperlinks to the files, but when I click the hyperlink, I am prompted for a
username & password. If I click cancel, it opens the file. The files
themselves are not password protected. I just don't want people to be
prompted for a username and password because it's confusing. I thought the
permissions were set correctly..but maybe they aren't. The permissions are
default because I haven't changed them. This is one of two websites that I
am in charge of and I didn't have this problem with the first site. Any
ideas??? Thanks!

I posted them in the public_html directory. I believe that is the default
directory. If this answer doesn't make sense, then let me know. I'm still
learning a lot.

That makes sense.
It also tells me that your site is hosted on an apache server.
are they in the root folder of your web, ( same place where index.htm lives )
or did you put them in their own folder?? ( which I would recommend )

Just make sure they are "not" in the _private folder or any folder that begins with an underscore _

Yes, it is hosted on an Apache server. The files are in the root folder
along with all of the .htm pages & graphics from a gallery page, etc...not a
private folder. Would putting the files in their own folder help?

It's the files in the Application page, and the Registration Form at the
bottom of the Calendar page. Sorry I didn't specify.

I didn't get prompted for a user name and password.
I did however get the prompt to open or save the word doc, which is normal.

You might want to edit the file name for this one:
http://www.carolinaclaymatters.org/Suze Lindsay wksp registration.doc
and replace the spaces with underscores_
Spaces are what create %20 which will break links in some browsers.

I will check some other computers when I get the chance. I appreciate your
help. Hopefully playing with some settings helped today although I'm still
having that problem on this computer. So long as it works on other computers
I'm happy. Once again, thank you.

Works fine here too.

Minor suggestion: turn your PDFs into fillable pdf's - same for the Word
forms, that way someone can fill out the form without the need to do it by
hand (your pdf), or messing up the formatting in the Word docs. Then they
can save the filled out form and just email it back to you. You will need
Acrobat (not just the reader) or possibly one of the free pdf writers to
make the pdfs fillable forms. If you need help let me know.

I upgraded to IE7 and I still have the problem on this computer. I contacted
the webhost and they are switching to new servers. My site is on the old
server that, according to the tech guy, is no longer updated and also prompts
for a username/password. Although if you guys had no problem, then he
probably told me that just so I would switch, which I don't really mind.

Thanks for the suggestion about the PDFs. I offered to do that for the
organization, but they declined. I will run it by them again. They are a
little more lazy than tight, so there is a chance that they will pay to have
it done that way in order to elmininate some of the paperwork. What would
you suggest I charge per form?

Thanks,
Ross

If you've done it before it wouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes to convert
each form.
