publisher to PDF

i am inexperienced and in need of help. I have a publisher 2002 file that i convert to PDF using distiller (with press setting and no color management). It is a grayscale with 1 pantone spot color. I sent it to a commericial printer (who doesnt have publisher or a PC), and they say that they cant print it because the colors are seperated. Even the black is CMYK sepeerated...I dont really know too much about this but does anyone know if I am just doing something wrong. I justr want to convert to a PDF and preserve the exact colors (black, white, graysacle, and 1 spot color). thanks in advance.

You will need to upgrade to Publisher 2003 in order to do that. Publisher
2002 and below can output only RGB composites.

Why not create a separated PDF? You will get the black and spot color on individual pages.

Yes, with Publisher 2003 and Adobe Acrobat you can create a composite PDF
that correctly maintains CMYK and spot colors. You do have to modify your
Distiller configuration a little to get it to work with Publisher, but once
you do that it works correctly (most of the time).

Jeff-
youve been a great help. When you say that you need to modify distiller a little. I select the "press" setting and leave color management off. telling it to not change the color, is that what you mean? thanks

Unfortunately it is a bit more involved than that. Microsoft has an article
that steps you the process:

It is also worthwhile to configure your printer driver to not use printer
resident fonts. Microsoft describes how to do this here:

There is an incompatibility between Acrobat Distiller and Publisher that
prevents you from printing directly to Distiller from Publisher. You have to
print to file first, then distill the saved file (this is described in the
above article). It works, but it is a little bit of a hassle. If you don't
like doing this, Publisher can print directly to Global Graphic's Jaws PDF
creator, which is capable of generating press-ready PDF files. It seems to
be a little faster and is less expensive than Acrobat to boot.

Jeff,

Hmmm, I must have a special version of Pub 2002, because I always print
directly to Distiller.

Yes you are correct, Publisher 2002 can print directly to Acrobat Distiller,
but I was referring to Publisher 2003 as the original thread was about
creating composite CMYK and spot color PDFs which Publisher 2002 can not do.
