Re-installing Office is never the approach to take for most issues & these
lengthy error reports [beyond the "Thread 0 crashed"] are as meaningless to
the users here as they are to you :)

Since you've repaired permissions have you shut down your Mac?

It appears you many be another victim of Snow Leopard's font free-for-all.
Try this;

Run Font Book to Resolve Duplicates & to Validate Fonts,

With no Office apps running go to:

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008

and delete the file: Office Font Cache (12),

Shut Down [not restart], wait a minute or two, then see if things improve
once you start up again.

Trying this again... prior post cut off my question.

I have the same error message as posted, and I did everything they did as well, I followed your suggestions <several times> and still receive the same error message. I am a CPA without a spreadsheet....I am going into withdrawals here not to mention falling way behind in my work.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I want to report that this did fix my problem. Thank you VERY VERY VERY much for taking the time to reply to my post. I will say that getting all of the fonts squared away was a little trickier than just clicking resolve duplicates. I had to click reveal in finder and then manually delete about five of the duplicates. After that everything has worked perfect. Thanks again!

Shut Down [not restart], wait a minute or two, then see if things improve
once you start up again.

Tried this with Office 11 installation, and no joy Excel still
hangs...
Any other options?

Well, not to be sarcastic but this solution was not aimed at you, so it
isn't surprising that it didn't work -- you're using a totally different
version of the software & we have no idea which version of OS X. Rather than
jumping into a different user's scenario how about submitting a NEW message
stating all particulars pertinent to your situation. Mixing conversations is
confusing for everyone :)
