Resize the TEXT from a US paper to European A4

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a 30 page manuscript drafted in North America to the US letter size. I cannot get it to resize to European A4. I have tried all the page set up, print set up, got rid of the normal.dotm and restarted word. I have even opened up a new document and imported section by section from the source document. That worked for awhile and then automatically the text layout reverts to US. Therefore printing on A4 there is a huge margin on the right. On screen the document is "too small". The Paper Size is A4 all right but the text formatting fits US letter and no matter what I do (5 hours!!!) will not fill up to fit the A4 paper size. There are about 100 plus embedded academic references in the text so I need to work with the document. If I must recreate from scratch - perhaps 3 of 4 man days of waisted time. Please do not point me at the generic solutions on the mactopia site - I have tried them all.

In all probability there are Comments in the document & Show Balloons is
selected in Word> Options> Track Changes. [That further suggests that there
may also be unresolved changes tracked in the document.]

Delete the Comments -or- change the Track Changes setting for Balloons -or-
on the Reviewing Toolbar select Final from the Display for Review list -or-
deselect Comments in the Show list.

If that isn't the problem or if none of these options resolve it you may be
dealing with a corrupt document. Reply with details for other possibilities.

Yes track changes is definitely on and that seems to work, I have not finished yet. I also had to get rid of a lot of section breaks and that seemed to have an effect. As well my co-author embedded links such that if one clicked on, for example, the words Table 8, you would be sent immediately to that table - great for web based viewing, academic journals, perhaps not. I am having some luck "purging" all that and getting a reasonable layout thanks

Glad to hear that it's working out. Just keep in mind that Track Changes is
not something to be turned on & left on indefinitely. That's a sure way to
corrupt the document. Track changes during an editing session as necessary
but accept/reject at the end of the session & turn the feature off when not
needed. If you need to retain a version containing the changes tracked to
that point use Save As to create interim versions.

Hi Stan:

Paper size is stored in each section break.

You need to select the whole document, and then set the paper size for ALL
the sections.

Then you need to REMOVE all the manual page breaks, so Word can re-flow the
document.

Yes, you're quite right, it is very possible to format a document so it is
simply impossible to easily change the paper size, and many people do
exactly that

The secret is "do not use ANY page breaks". If you do that, Word can
re-flow the text automatically when you change the paper size. If you
don't, you get to repaginate the whole document page-by-page...
