Save as picture with transparent background

I am trying to save excel charts as pictures with transparent backgrounds (both plot area and chart background set to no fill). If I choose GIF, the picture is saved with a transparent background, but at a very low resolution. If I save as PNG, the picture is scalable, but the background is white .This is strange, since PNG supports transparency. Is it a bug?
