Saving docs

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I am using Word 2008 for Mac to create my resume yet the agency that I've sent it to says they cannot open the attachment. How do I save this so that the average user on a pc with Microsoft office can open this? He's asking for a word doc. Duh?

There are all kinds of reasons why they cannot open the attachment,
including "not trying". Try to find out *why* they can't and what they
tried.

Meantime, give them the "Word 97-2004 Document.doc" format which is only
about 13 years old.

If they've kept their software updated they should not have any trouble
opening a Word file saved in either .doc or .docx format. However,
attachments can get butchered in the email process. If they *must* have a
Word file take the following steps:

1- Always save using file name extensions - Tick the checkbox in the Save As
dialog.
2- Stuff/Zip the file & attach it rather than the bare Word document.
3- Make sure your email app is properly set for encoding attachments
(depends on the app).

IMHO, it's better to send a PDF rather than a Word document. There's no
guarantee that a Word file will display/print as intended even if it arrives
unscathed. There are other factors that can prevent it from presenting
exactly as you designed it... and there's usually no valid reason for a
'headhunter' to have an editable copy of your resume. If absolutely
necessary, send both the Word file & a PDF.

Thanks for the reply. I work in a field where "not trying" is going to be a default setting so I do want to make this "click and it appears" simple.

give them the "Word 97-2004 Document.doc" format

Actually, that was the first format that I tried......
