Shadow copy on PSTs?

S

Steve Silverwood

I was advised by the Vista people to post this inquiry here, as they
don't know of anything specific to Vista that would account for this:

Sometimes I've noticed that there's a lot of hard disk activity going
on as I shut Outlook 2007 down. This didn't seem to be a problem in
XP, but in Vista it seems to be more significant. I also noticed some
large fluctuations in the amount of free disk space, particularly
during shutdown of Outlook. My PST files tend to be pretty large,
usually at least 1Gb and frequently larger.

Questions: (1) is Vista making a "shadow copy" of the .PST file for
restoration, like with other Office file documents? and (2) is there a
way to exempt .PST files from this process?

Thanks.

1) Yes
2) AFAIK you cannot configure this in Vista (note it is not an Outlook
related option). You can of course put your pst-file on a partition for
which you don't have Previous Versions enabled. Note that System Restore
will take up to 15% of your harddrive space; excluding Outlook files will
only result in keeping more restore points. Also note that it will only
create a single copy a day (first save modification after an automatic
restore point was created).

Either way; it's a Vista function and does not have anything special going
on for pst-files so I guess you were asking the wrong Vista folk ;-)
