Split Task Duration

Have you noticed that for a task with an assignment, after splitting it, the
duration of the task will vary it you change you task type form "Fixed
Duration" to "Fixed Work"?

I think it's a tricky situation since when you look to a Duration column on
a Gantt Chart, there is no way to know if it's Fixed Work or Duration type.

I'm using MsP2003 + SP3.
