I found an article describing how to set up stencil file sharing on a
network for multiple users. I am using Visio 2003. I quoted below from
the article:

You can share stencil files so that multiple users can access them at once.
However, when you share stencil files, it is important that users not open
them in read/write mode. (When a Visio drawing file is opened in read/write

By default, the read-only attribute is set for stencil files to prevent
users from opening them in read/write mode. You can also set the network
Visio directory to read-only to prevent users from opening the files in
read/write mode."
I am confused about the read-only file folder attribute. When I go to
the file folder where I store my stencils, I look at View/Customize This
Folder. Under General/Attributes the read-only box is selected. I have
options under Security to select Full Control, Modify, Read & Execute,
List Folder Contents, Read, Write, Special Permission. None of these are
selected for Allow or Deny.
All of these stencils are in Read/Write mode. When I open them in a
drawing, I can edit them. If I understand the above comments from the
article, all of the files in the file folder should be opened as
read-only if this is selected under General/Attributes.
Am I looking in the right place to set this up? Any suggestions are
appreciated.
Currently I edit stencil files located on my personal computer. The
Visio drawings (on my computer) point to this file folder for the
stencils after I added the path under tools/options/advanced/file paths.
These stencils are in read/write mode.
On the network drive I copy these updated files daily. I found where I
can select all files in the directory and change all at once to
read-only. For everyone else in the company, their computer points to
this network drive so the files are in read-only when they open the file.
One reason I did this is I could not see a way to choose options for
opening a stencil file if I set up a path like described in the previous
paragraph to easily select stencils without looking for them. I have to
select File/open in the drawing and then search for the file to choose
opening the file in read-only or read/write mode.
