Summary Tasks and Master Project Plans

I have created a Master project plan to encompass all of

the projects that we are working on in our department.
Each individual project has it's own plan and is
incorporated into the Master. The "summary task"
contains the project name for each inserted project as
well as high level information for each project. It
appears that the summary task does not link from the
individual project plan to the master project plan. What
I mean is that the summary task in the "individual"
project plan does not automatically update the summary
task in the "master" project plan (and vice versa). Why
is that? Is there a setting somewhere that can make this
happen?

Yes, the "Link to project" box is/was checked.
