Table style in template for long doc

Hi, I am starting a document for a thesis and am using a template that was
devised for a long report. It has very handy items in it that are already set
up, styles for title, heading,s etc. It also has styles for figures and
tables. I am trying to amend the style for the Tables. As it stands now the
style actually inserts "Table 1" and then dictates the text style for your
caption. The table numbers come up sequentially for subsequent tables. The
"Table 1" teaxt has a square mark on the left margin beside it. I want to
change the font of the "Table 1", but it won't let me. I can only change the
font for the caption. Is there any way anyone can think of to change the
style of the "Table 1" also? Is it some kind of field that I need to access
some other way?
Many thanks for any help.

Without having any indication of what your update level of which version of
Word, or even what operating system you're using it's a bit difficult to be
certain. In general, what you seem to be referring to are Captions for
Tables & Figures. The formatting of Captions is typically controlled by a
style by the same name ‹ Caption. However, in a customized template it's
entirely possible that a different style has been used for that purpose.

Click in one of the captions & determine which style has been applied ‹
where to look depends on the version information mentioned above... There
could be a Style list on a Formatting Toolbar, there may be a Styles Task
Pane, it could be identified on the Ribbon, etc. Whatever that style is
should be able to be modified in order to change the specified font as well
as any other attributes of the style.

BTW: The "square mark" is most likely a non-printing character which
indicates that one of the Line & Page Breaks paragraph attributes has been
included in the style that is being applied to the Captions.
