Template with Letterhead

We have created a template with a Letterhead that we don't want changed. We
have a few lines below the letterhead that can be changed. Such as a county
name and address. How do we protect only the header and the footer of the
template but allow all other kinds of editing in the body. If we protect the
document we can't do mail merge. We need to be able to do mail merge. We
are using Word version 2003. Not version 2007.
Any help would be appreciated.

If you need to use Mail Merge then you can't include any type of document
protection. Are you trying to protect it from malicious changes or
accidental changes? If accidental then place your letterhead content that
shouldn't be changed in the First Page Header. If you are using the
header/footer for other pages then in your template add both, the First Page
Header/Footer and the Header/Footer for all other pages. You can add a
temporary page break if necessary so you can access the header/footer. Then
if a document uses a single page you'll see only the First Page
Header/Footer. If it is more than one page the previously added
header/footer will display.

Thanks for you answer, I had pretty much figured that out, but needed
confirmation. Will we be able to lock down sections (such as the letterhead,
and be able to protect that in 2007?

Word 2007 doesn't function any differently than previous versions when it
comes to document protection.

Now, it does have a new forms feature called Content Controls which you can
use to lock content without enabling document protection. However, they're
intended to be used to prevent accidental changes and not intended to be
used for security.

We are having a problem with the margins. I put everything into the header
and it looks great but if the user changes the margins it throws the header
off. So I put in a section break and for some reason we get a SQL message.
What would cause a message to come up like that, and can we somehow lock the
header down so that people can change the margins?

there has to be a way that people make a letterhead in Word 2003, Could
someone help us with that? I have looked at companies that prepare
letterheads and they seem to have items that aren't locked down. How do we
get a letterhead that stays so that when we change the margins it doesn't get
shifted to the left or right? And staff is able to use it for multiple uses
such as mail merge, cut and paste, editing, etc.

If you need to keep the header a specific size then place it in a borderless
Word table. That way if the margins change the table and the content will
stay. Note you may need to make some property changes to the table depending
on what you want to do exactly, such as center the table on the page so if
the margins change it continues to stay centered.

I'm not sure about the SQL message. That does it say exactly?
