The messaging interface has returned an unknown error

When downgrading a user from office 2007 to Office 2003 I receive the message
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error " when I try to reply
to all, and when I try to update a task. I fully uninstalled Office 07
rebooted then installed Office 03, I've done some looking into this and see
that others are having this issue but don't seem to see a solution any help
would be great.

try to read or to delete e-mail, or when you click 'Send/Receive' in
Outlook: 'An unknown error has occurred' or 'Messaging interface has
caused an unknown error'". You should back up your Outlook .pst file(s)
*before* you attempt the repair procedure, just in case Something Bad
happens.

Sorry, our mail sits on an Exchange server so the only .pst file would be a
archive or backup file. I did do what was suggested though, but no go.
