TLS SMTP Problems

B

BajaNut

Hello,
I have been having problem since I upgraded Office 2003 to sp1 and all the
hotfixes. I am no longer able to connect to my mail server to send mail
through TLS. It works on my other machine which hasn't been updated (running
office 2003). It works on another system I have running Office XP (don't
know what SP it is on). I have all systems setup exactly the same way and it
works on all but my new one which I have updated. I have uninstalled office
and re-installed it and still doesn't work. I have had to download
thunderbird so that I can send and recieve mail correctly. Please help me
out.

mail server: wgz.org
account: bmeyer
incomming port: 993 (tls)
Outgoing port: 25 (tls)

I have it set to SSL like I am suposed to and it should default to tls when
ssh fails.

What am I missing?

Thank You,

Ben

Do you have any type of security software installed that scans outgoing SMTP
mail? If you do, try disabling the feature in that program.

B

BajaNut

Yes, But I have disabled it and uninstalled it to test if that was it.
Neither have made a differance.

From your log, here is the definition for each hex error number

0x8004210b = Timeout
0x800ccc7d = SSL not supported
0x800ccc0f = Connection dropped/closed

If I didn't know any better, it looks like Outlook is never getting past the
"SSH" portion so the drop back can occour. Outside of that, I can't
duplicate the problem since I can establish a TLS/SSL session on port 25 or
465 against Sendmail* or Exchange.

* generally requires a recompile to support microsoft mail clients because
they start clear, secure the port, then do the work. Sendmail has to be
recompiled using -D_FFR_SMTP_SSL.

** you will also find quite a few posts by me or jeff stephenson on this.
you might want to call microsoft product support and request update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887568&sd=RMVP.
Inform the support engineer that you have having issues with SSL/TLS over
non-standard SMTP ports and you heard that this fix might correct.

I have broken down and re-imaged my machine and I am running Office 2003 and
I will not update to any of the SP's or hotfixes untill sp2 is out at least.
It has happened to me twice since I got my laptop and I ended up re-imaging
it each time to get rid of it. So far it is working w/out a problem and I
have my firewall up and running. I am able to send messages to port 25
(which is the only port that we have open on the server for smtp) and using
TLS which is required as well as authintication.

I don't remember the software exactly what software that is used. But it is
a Linux box.
