TOC will not generate

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I assigned STYLE Header 1 to topics. I eventually used all three methods independently for inserting TOC:

Field, generated: { TOC \* MERGEFORMAT}
Document Elements, generated: { TOC \o "1-1 \h \z \u }
Index & Tables, generated: { TOC \o "1-1" }

To update the TOC, I used Cmd->Option->Shift->U. A dialog asks if want to update page or entire table, I pick entire table. None of the three methods of inserting TOC generates a TOC!

Yes, the header is assigned.

Sigh, I've built TOCs dozens of times in the past with no hassle. None! I have searched the Mac Word MVP site, Mactopia, and google, tried Word's help, but I am stymied. I'm not a Word novice but, once again, with Word 2008, I have to appeal to the experts for help with something that in the past was a nobrainer.

Thanks
Max

Hi Maximzodal,

If what you're seeing is the field codes, you need to toggle them 'off', which you can do via Option-F9.

Hi Maximzodal,

That did the trick. Thanks Macropod!

This is the same problem with merge that drove me nuts recently.
After merging, all the data fields were filled correctly except the
bar code. The bar code field showed. A suggestion here to toggle
the field off worked. I've done TOC and mail merge a hundred times
before without having to toggle any fields, much less apparently only
some specific fields. Why Microsoft suddenly decided the default
should be requiring manually toggling off specific fields is an
enhancement is beyond my comprehension. Is there actually a sane,
rational, reason for doing this that I am missing?

In other posts, I've seen reference to making suggestions, about Word
to MS at the Mactopia site. I suppose the suggestion is that MSBU
people actually read the posts? So, since I posted my problem to
Mactopia but this post comes from google groups, does this reply go
back to Mactopia?

Thanks,
Max

Hi Max,

these newsgroups (regardless of the interface that is used to access
them, Mactopia, Google Groups, or NNTP) are not monitored by Microsoft
employees. If you want to send your feedback to MacBU, click on
Help>Send Feedback about Word inside Microsoft Word. The feedback is
actually monitored and tracked in a database. The more frequent a
feature request is made, the higher the chances of this feature being
implemented in an update or in the next version of Office for Mac (if it
is technically feasible).

Hi Max,

Additional to Michel's response, displaying the codes rather than the
resulting content is *not* the default behavior. AFAIK, MacBU made no such
"sudden" decision... When I insert a TOC here that's what displays, not the
field code. There are any number of ways the code toggling can be triggered,
especially with Apple clandestinely commandeering Function key assignments
with every revision of OS X they release.
