How do you open embedded object files in Office 2008? I have Excel spreadsheets that have embedded files such as PDF files or PowerPoint files. When I double-click on the icon for these embedded files in the spreadsheet I get the following message: "Cannot start the source application for this object."

In Office for Windows, this works just fine.

PowerPoint & PDF readers aren't OLE-compliant applications on the Mac
platform, therefore you can't insert them as objects in Mac applications
nor will they open in files where they've been embedded on a PC.

Short of running Windows & PC Office in Boot Camp, Parallels or Fusion or
running PC Office using CrossOver [which doesn't require Windows] I don't
know of any way to open the objects on a Mac. Stay tuned to see if someone
else may have a suggestion.
