unable to send emails

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

In the last few I have been unable to send emails receiving OK Every now and then it works but 90% of the time will not send, they stay in the out box. I am getting the following error message " Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods"
Your help would be great to solve this problem. Thanks Peter

Have you made any modifications to your account settings? This error message
indicates that one or more sending options do not work with your account. Go
to Tools>Accounts, double-click your account and click on the "Click here
for advanced sending options" button to verify if any boxes that are
normally supposed to be unchecked are now checked. Potential culprits are
"SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)" and "Override default SMTP
port".

If this does not solve the problem, you might also be experiencing problems
with the outgoing server. What is the name of your email provider?

I recently had the same problem and finally called my ISP's help desk. For
years I've been logging into my SMTP using as Username: myusername.

My ISP changed their SMTP server (without notifying me) to require as
Username: (e-mail address removed).

I changed that as required and have been able to send email with no problem.
