When I try to look up a word in the dictionary, I get the message "Office cannot connect to the Internet" but I AM CONNECTED (high speed). What should I do?

Since you've omitted the necessary specifics start with the basics:

1- Make sure Office is fully updated (12.2.1),

2- Run disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions,

3- Restart your Mac

Reply with details including exact OS update level if the problem persists.

Which firewall are you using, and which ports do you have open?

This issue sometimes means there is a problem with the DNS at your ISP.

I don't know what firewall I use - whatever came with the computer which
is about 2 years old now. How do I check this? As for ports, if you're
asking what's in use, I use all 3 USB ports on the back of the computer
(for keyboard, printer and scanner) and 1 on the keyboard. I also have
an external drive plugged in to the firewire port.

No, I meant TCP/IP Ports on the firewall/router. Since you do not know, we
should assume that you have no firewall running and that all ports are open.

I just tried it, and it doesn't seem to be working very well...

In the Microsoft Word 2008 Help, look up the topic " Translate text".

Follow the instructions EXACTLY.

You may have to try several times. Eventually, you will either see the
translated text in the window below, or you will get a prompt saying that
Online Access to the proofing tools is turned OFF. Do what it says, and the
translation should appear.

Hope this helps

I've tried what you suggested at least a dozen times now and still get exactly the same result: cannot connect to the internet."

You've still not indicated whether you've done as suggested in my original
reply, nor supplied the requested information. It's difficult to make
further suggestions than what John has offered if we don't know what we're
working with.

As explained in my original reply: "You will get a prompt saying Online
Access is turned off". When you do, follow the instruction in that prompt
to turn it on.

You have declined permission for Word to go on the Internet: if you do that,
neither the Help nor the Reference nor the Translation tools will work.

Cheers

I am not getting the prompt "Online access is turned off", all I get is the message "Office cannot connect to the Internet.

Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet, and press RETURN to try again."

I did do exactly what you asked: I searched in help for translate text, got the instructions:

" In the Word or Phrase box, type Nature never deceives us; it is we who deceive ourselves, and then click Translation.
Note If the Translation panel is already open, press RETURN"

What am I doing wrong? How do I give permission to connect to the internet?

I am sorry, I do not have an answer for you. So far, we have not seen the
dialog box that would tell us.

Please try these things and tell me what happens:

1) Open Word 2008, then open the Help, and type "Headers and Footers"
without the quotes in the search box inside the Word 2008 Help (not the
Finder search box).

The first topic listed should be a Movie: "Create headers and footers for
documents". If it is, your copy of Word is online.

2) The little button at the bottom left of the help main window should be
blue and the drop-down beside it should read "Online Help".

Otherwise, click the disclosure triangle at the bottom of the Help window
where it says "Offline help" and choose "Online help".

That should fix your issue.

If both of those things are true, you are online and I don't know what else
to suggest. (Well, I do, but you need someone with computer knowledge to
investigate your firewall and router to ensure they are not blocking the
WordLingo service).

Hope this helps
