Where is the local pc copy of a shared onenote notebook?

I have a onenote notebook on a network server that I access from various
other computers, either through the network or vpn. Access to that server
notebook file is fine. However, is there a local version of the same notebook
for when I am offline or disconnected from the network. If so,where is it and
can it be relocated to a directory of choice. Will changes to the local file
then be written to the network share when I connect again.

Try as I might I can't find a local version of the file. I have changed the
default locations for the save files to C:\notebooks and nothing is being
written there.

The contents are stored in a cache file which holds a cache of all your
notebooks. It is called "onenoteofflinecache.onecache" and you can see where
it is stored by looking at tools \ options \ save. You can move it wherever
you like from there (but keep it on the local computer - it is a cache, after
all). Don't just move the file - the embedded files in notebooks are also
part of the cache and you'll need to use OneNote to move them all around.

Moving it should present no problems.

I am wondering why you want to move it around...

If you are curious about the cache, you can check some of my blog entries
about this. One of the more recent is at

Thanks for the response. One More issue: If the shared file is password
protected is the data in the cache protected as well/

As for moving the files: i just find that the files buried in "documents
and settings" to opaque for backup etc functions as opposed to a separate
folder in the drive.

Most workstation backup programs will back up everything in the user
profile (C:\Documents and Settings or C:\Users) by default, so keeping the
ON cache there seems to be the simpler solution from a backup POV. Indeed,
the built-in backup program in Vista essentially backs up that profile
directory and little else, or at least doesn't give one the option to back
up additional directories. Thankfully that option is given back to us in
W7.

Having said all that, I wouldn't worry about backing up the cache. I would
concentrate on ensuring that the files on the servers are protected and
backed up. If you lost a workstation, the most recent data will be on the
server anyway; I don't know if there is a supported method to restore the
cache from another computer or from a previous point in time and not have
any data conflicts...

I am still concerned about the security of data in the cache.

If the shared file is password protected is the data in the cache password
protected as well?

Thanks.

Yes.
