Why Can't Publisher 2007 Insert Certain TIFF Files?

K

Publisher 2007 says it supports the TIF file format by default. Why is
that some TIF files can be inserted into a Publisher document with no
problem, while others cannot?

The TIFs that cannot be inserted cause a "Convert File" dialogue box
to appear on screen. The dialogue box has a "Convert File From" drop
down list with various file types to choose from, including TIF. And
even if you choose TIF from the convert file dialogue box, the TIF
fails to insert into the Publisher document anyway.

Just trying to understand the criteria for creating useable TIFs for
Publisher

Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272399 for a general description of
graphics file formats. In a nutshell, all tiffs are not alike. For me, the
usual problem has been when an application doesn't support the compression
method used. When I can't insert a tiff or jpg into Publisher, I try to open
the file with an image editor and save it as a png. Png uses lossless
compression so you don't lose any information like you would with jpg.

I typically save images as TIFFs with these settings:

Image Compression: none
Pixel Order: Interleaved (RGBRGB)
Byte Order: IBM PC

Shouldn't these settings yield a Publisher compatible TIFF?

Why not use PNG? It will save you trying to work out how to beat the
TIFF format and Publisher's TIFF support into submission.

I would ask: When you save images as tiffs with compression none,
interleaved, IBM PC byte order, can you insert them into Publisher 2007?

I am using Publisher 2003 and tiffs with LZW compression and no compression
are supported, tiffs with zip and jpeg compression are not supported and
bring up the Convert File dialog. Byte order doesn't seem to matter. Your
question seems to imply that sometimes you can't insert your tiffs with those
settings without actually saying that is the case.

The point about saving images as PNGs is to completely avoid any tiff issues.

What's the color bit depth...gonna guess 32 bit? Try 24 highest instead.

I use TIFFs out of habit because that's what I use in Quark and
InDesign documents. They are 8 bit color depth, I can try 16, 32 bits
is greyed out. I rather stay with TIFF, which is a format geared
toward print production, rather than use PNG, which I believe is more
of a web image format. So I'm somewhat committed to the TIFF format.
But that's a discussion for another day.

The odd part of this issue is that the "problem" TIFFs insert without
a problem in Publisher 2003 documents. It's the Publisher 2007
documents that won't accept them.

When I tried it yesterday with a 32 bit .tif (may have had layers as well)
it didn't work, when I decreased the bit depth to 8 it worked fine inserting
into pub - and it was quite a large file as well.

If you want you can send me the file and I'll give it a shot here.

put PUB NG in the subject line or I may spamdump it
