Why is my word locked?

When I try to type in my microsoft word it says "This modification is not
allowed because the selection is locked" and I have no clue how to fix it?

If it's a trial version that's expired, it's time to buy a copy. If it's a
new retail copy, have you activated it?

Well, I guess that's not the case, is it? ;-) It wouldn't be the first time
it expired early. BTW, did you actually activate it with the product key?
