Why wont backspace delete selected text

I have been asked why a user's backspace key is no longer deleting selected
text. In my application (word 2003) this works fine. Is there a setting
that can be changed?

Tools - Options - Edit, enable Typing Replaces Selection.

Could I ask for help please.
I have installed Office Home & Student 2007 and typed several pages of text,
inserted pictures etc. however when I go back into my work and try to delete
a word or phrase the cursor just pops back to the right hand side of the
word. I have tried highlighting + delete and highlighting and cutting and
although a message comes up saying "the word has been added to the clipboard"
it is still there in the body of the sentence.
I opened a previously saved document and found that I could not delete in
the top third of the page, but as I moved down the page I could delete. How
strange is that?
As a silversurfer I would appreciate any and all help I can get.
