Windows cannot find C:\<filename>. Make sure...

This is a continuing and very annoying problem. I am essentially restating a
2007 thread
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...rors&tid=a0575e02-465f-4d0e-9ca0-77852d657760)
because it persists and that thread is so long it’s hard to find any answer
that works for me. I’ve tried everyone I’ve found there (more below).

Windows Vista (on new machine) with MS Office 2007. Both are completely
updated.

The problem:

When you open any Word doc/docx file (even in the recent documents list) it
opens Word 2007 but I get the message "Windows cannot find C:\<filename>.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again".

A second try simply opens the document because Word has started - though
there is occasionally a second failure like the first. This means every
document has to be "opened" twice - a huge waste of time; opening a doc/docx
from within the Word program works fine.

I’ve not noticed this with any other of my Office programs although
according to the earlier thread, it has affected some.

Please note: Before you respond here are solutions in the old thread that I
have tried…
• Changing or uninstalling my virus program did not make a difference.
• It’s not just an issue to do with .doc vs .docx
• I have double checked the file associations.
• I have uninstalled & reinstalled Office.
• I have re-registered Word even after deleting the original registry entry
as described at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/921541.
• Other programs do not seem to affect the problem as I installed Office on
a brand new computer –first program I installed – and the problem started
immediately.
• Firefox and BCM have never been on my system so they do not affect the
problem.
• My printer is not shared.
• I disabled Defender and rebooted.
• I tried the fix of altering the Word12.pip file.
• I ran the Office Diagnostics.
None of these things have affected the problem.

Can anyone help or suggest anything else?

Microsoft, are you listening?

I do not have Norton. The system came with McAfee. Disabling it did not alter
matters.

Yes. I did try KB/940791's both methods (step-by-step and the downlaoded
wizard); neither method helped.

I appreciation your continuing efforts to help resolve this issue.

That's me out of ideas. You have tried all the usual solutions. It still
sounds like an AV plug-in but if you have disabled it, it cannot be that
then. I presume you ran the Office REPAIR option?

I don't have an answer, but perhaps my obsevations may help. I used to see
this a lot but can't remember the last time I saw it. I seem to recall it
happening when the document name contained spaces, and my guess (and it is
just a guess) is that this has something to do with the operating system
rather than Word itself - as I said, I can't remember when I last saw it,
but I suspect it was before I had Vista (also before I had Word 2007); it
may also not have happened since I have been using disks formatted as NTFS
instead of FAT - but I can't remember exactly what I set up, or when. I do
not run any AV program so that was never a possibility for me - most of the
other things you list seem spurious (although always worth trying when all
else fails).

Okay. It's "fixed."

Not sure why by it must have somehow been associated with the User account.
For another entirely different reason Dell had me create a different User
account, which I did. Simultaneously, at least so far (less than 24 hours)
the "Windows cannot finf message has not recurred.

If you 'fixed' it when you used a new profile but it came back, it suggests
an incompatible third party add-in that is causing the problem by damaging
the registry somewhere. You tried the FIX button at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791 so it must be something else.

What happens if you log in as a different user now?

I first tried the FIXIT but it didn't work.
I created a new account and then a Word document. Closing Word each time I
was able to open it using just the shortcut. I was also able to open Word
clicking on a file from the original User account using Windows Explorer.
I restarted the system was able to open both successfully again.

I had the same problem and could not fix it. Finally, I did. How?
My mistake was that I was uninstalling the Office and then installing it, with some old Office registry entries still present. The uninstall function does not clear all registry entries.
Here is what to do:
1. Uninstall office
2. Go to regedit
3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft
4. Right-click and delete the 'Office' key

Then,

1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft
2. Right-click and delete the 'Office' key

Then, if you have one, run the registry cleaner, for example Registry Mechanic.

Then, fresh-install the Office.

This should do. It solved the problem for me. I tried many solutions recommended on internet, but nothing else worked.
