Word 2000 crashes on exiting

After working flawlessly for years, my Word 2000 installation has suddenly
started crashing when I exit the program. As far as I can tell I've altered
nothing, but obviously something must have changed somewhere. The program
works perfectly while it's up and running.

I tried uninstalling the software and installing it again, but the very
first time I ran it (having made no changes in the configuration) the same
thing happened.

This is Word 2000 running under Windows 7 on a desktop PC.

Any thoughts as to what has gone wrong will be most welcome. Many thanks.

I seem to have fixed the problem by experimentally upgrading to Word 2003.
But is it likely to come back?
