No, I have done the permissions verify and repair, I have run AutoUpdate, I have tested all the permission files, I have done the same with font prefs. I have gone through a number of forums to find out the issue to no avail. I have tried saving as an htm file and then rebuilding the file by saving as a doc. I have tried rft and back, I have tried everything.

Now, please everyone, don't start telling me I should be using Openoffice or Pages or I should sort out my client who can only read doc files - I know all that stuff. Let's just deal with reality. Any suggestions from anyone? Can I safely remove office and reinstall?

I am having a similar problem... same version of Word, same OS X version. When I try to save a Word doc in .docx format I get an error message indicating a disc error. It is the only time I get any sort of disc error message when saving a document... only in Word 12.2. The newest release seems particularly buggy. Hope there is another update soon, or I will have to go to OpenOffice. In the meantime, any ideas on how to sort this out?

Well, the "reality" is that you claim to have run AutoUpdate but your error
log indicates that you're still running 12.1.2 -- the current update level
is 12.2.0 (SP2). If you ran AutoUpdate as a direct launch you may have more
than one version of it & if you launched the wrong one it would fail to pick
up the availability. If you ran it via Help> Check for Updates it must have
not gotten fully applied. See the suggestions here for a successful update:

Cybertaz, by the way, for completeness, I tried running update as a direct launch, as a 'from Word" launch (and excel and PPT) and also as a download of the patch from M$ and then mounting it directly. Cheers.

OK, so now go to the Word menu and choose the "About" item.

It should SAY "Version 12.2.0 (Build 090605)", and if it doesn't, then the
update did not apply correctly.

Yes, you can safely run the Office Remover tool ‹
System:Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Additional Tools:Remove
Office:Remove Office.app

Then re-install. It's safe to do this provided you run the Remove Office
tool first. If you don't. There's a high risk of making the problem worse
by introducing inconsistent versions of application components.

When removing, and when installing, it really pays to ensure that you do not
have any other drives or volumes mounted that contain Office or Preferences.

If you do, the Updater can get confused and apply the update badly or not at
all.

Also: There is an issue saving from .docx to .doc. The old .doc format
cannot contain all of the things a .docx file can contain. Word will do its
best to down-convert those items to a format that can be stored in a .doc,
but it won't always succeed.

And some documents that contain a low-level corruption will crash when you
try to convert them.

Cheers

launch, as a 'from Word" launch (and excel and PPT) and also as a download of
the patch from M$ and then mounting it directly. Cheers.

Only Microsoft software developers can interpret crash logs, and Microsoft
rarely reads here. Make that "never".

It would appear that that one simply says "The Word application hung." But
you knew that.

My first thought would be "bad document". Have you tried another document?

Cheers

I'm getting the same problem. If a file has "low level corruption" I'm assuming that Word cannot work with it (even if word induced it in the first place)? In other words, once a file will not "save as" in this way (crashes Word) I'm never going to be able to work with that file . . . ?

On the face of it, yes.

But don't give up too easily ‹ while you can open the document, there is
always hope.

If you can get the file open at all, you can usually copy everything except
the last paragraph from the file.

If you can do that, you can usually paste that into a fresh blank document.

If you can save that, you have usually fixed the problem.

Hope this helps

??? I know you can do a "Maggie" on a .Doc file. But I thought on 2008
with docx you had to save as an HTML file then save as a doc or docx file.

Hi Phillip:

Good question!!

No, a Maggie works just as well in .docx as it does in .doc.

But my advise would always be to save to .doc or HTML first, and see if that
fixes it. A Maggie costs you your numbering and bullet formats, your
Section 1 headers and footers, and maybe some styles: better to avoid that
if you can.

All you need to do (often!) is to force Word to read its own handwriting.
When it saves out to a different format, Word writes a "neat copy" of the
file, without all the crossings-out. That's often enough to fix it.

If not, Maggie is your friend :)

Of course, you Maggie from the original, not the alternative copy. Saving
out to a different format will change/delete some things; if you need to
Maggie, you should always start with the original .docx.

Cheers
