Word: Auto File Recovery

M

Mark - NCSU

I am having a problem with Word Auto recovery. I had a file lock up on me
yesterday and when I start Word from Windows I get this file popping up in
Auto Recovery mode. When I try to save it Word completely locks up, stops
running and the only thing I can do is use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the Task
Manager to shut down the application. Word will not let me get past this Auto
Recovery option to let me open any other files.

Should I reinstall the software to override or drop kick the computer out
the window?

Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you got hit by the bungled Windows update between the time
Word crashed and the time you tried to recover.

First apply the fix in this article:

"Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

That should stop the lockup during the save, and let you get the recovery
file safely put away.

Once you've completed that, I recommend the cleanup procedure at
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm.
