Word document opens fine in Word 2003 -- error in Word 2002

Word document opens cleanly in Word 2003, errors/hangs in Word 2002.
Have tried on multiple systems running office 2003 and 2002. Error and
readability consistant. All systems running pro editions of office (2002 or
2003) and windows XP. All updates applied to office and OS.
Have applied compatibility patch - still receive the following
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.6829.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00010de3

Open Word 2002 in Safe Mode and try opening the Word 2003 document. From
Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Are you able to open the Word 2003 document now?
