Word fails to launch in Office 2000 premium and professional

Upgraded to new PC's with XP Pro installed, we installed the "Microsoft
Office 2000 Premium and Professional".
After installation, the "Word" application will not fully launch, just opens
the Word window and then freeze up. The word application reach a size of
33KB.
Have tried to "Repair" the installation, unsuccessful.

Other applications like Access, Excel, Outlook seems to work as anticipated

Is there some dll's which need to be repaired/replaced since the XP Pro is
at SP3?

Have you installed any Office 2000 updates or service packs yet? There are
lots of them. If you install them in the wrong order, with respect to XP
service packs, you can have problems. It has been three years since I
upgraded to 2003, so unfortunately I do not remember more.

Hi Earle and thanks.

Yes I used the "Office Update Installation Wizard" and got SR-1, SP2 & SP3
and the 12 security patches. The wizard keeps track of what is installed and
what is missing.
Word launches, but requires the original disc, and configures to SR-1. This
gives me the impression that something is not in right, however all the
downloads and installations, was ended with Successfully Installed please
reboot.

I remember after installing SR-1, any time I reconfigured Office for any
reason it said "Configuring Office SR-1". It did this even after I had
installed SP2 and SP3. Now did you install Office updates and patches
before or after XP SP3?

What I am getting at, is the order of XP versus Office service packs. If I
did this wrong in Windows 2000, I would have problems like you describe. I
think what I finally came up with, is I needed to install all W2k service
packs, then install Office and its service packs. As far as I know, the
problems I experienced were not documented in any Microsoft KB articles. XP
and Office 2000 may have a similar conflict.

Hello Earle, I tend to believe you are on the right track :)

So in order to, not to screw up what MS already did, You suggest me to

1. install all the Service Packs etc. before the Office 2000?
a.) if I remove the office 2000, then windows will not allow me to install
an update to a non installed product. Tried that with sp2 before reboot and
sr-1 was not recognized:)

2. I know it's a lot to ask, but since you basically know the status of my
installation, would you put in the sequence I should follow to get it work?

Thanks in advance

I'm working from memory here, but here is what I think I had to do.

1) Install Windows 2000 and all service packs.
then
2) Install Office 2000 and all service packs.

I don't know whether this will work with XP or not. I think if it does, you
have to start from scratch, i.e. reinstall XP, then all service packs before
any Office software. It was a mess for me, but I finally figured out that
the sequence above would work.
