word not responding

I was three pages deep of typing a data-based report when word went grey. I think I hit a button or something, and now have the round thingie going round and round, a greay screen, and "Word not responding" at the top. I can't seem to figure out how to stop it. I did not save as of yet. I am running vista with word 2003. HELP!!!!
