Word unable to access Custom Dictionaries

N

Nathan Griffiths

Ever since migrating a user to a new computer, the custom dictionaries have
been unavailable in Word. There are no errors, but enabling the dictionaries
in the preferences has no effect and the drop-down menu in the spelling
prefs is grayed out.

I initially suspected permissions - thinking that somehow Word was unable to
read or write to the file but even after blowing permissions wide open there
is no change.

I have removed & re-created the dictionaries, opened permissions, & repaired
permissions using diskutil - no change.

The user is running 10.6.2 & Office 2008 12.2.3. The account is a mobile
network account with FileVault enabled. Prior to migrating the user account
to the new laptop there were no problems.

Account migration was achieved by syncing the account to the server on the
old laptop, then logging in to the new laptop which creates & syncs a mobile
account on login.

Hi Nathan:

Never attempt to migrate a user account containing Microsoft Office :) The
migration migrates the user's preferences, which do not apply to the new
machine. Fails most times...

1) Find and delete the file Normal.dotm. Unless you have moved it, it
should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

2) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

3) User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

4) User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Then Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.

Should work now...

Cheers
