Word X unexpectedly quits after 10.1.2 update

After I installed the Office 10.1.2 update to my copy of Office v. X,
Word now unexpectedly quits on start-up, before the splash screen is
shown. Having searched around my HD, I've found the following clues
which I guess might be helpful. I'm running 10.2.8, and I've repaired
my permissions recently.
1) An extract from the Office X 10.1.2 Update Log file in /:
Update Error: -15 -> Macintosh HD:Applications:Microsoft Office
X:Microsoft Word
2) If I Get Info on Word, it shows up as version 10.0.0 (1316), yet
the rest of the suite shows as 10.1.0 or later (the rest all works,
still).
3) The last modified date for Word.app is 2003-05-05, whereas the rest
all have 2002-05-16 (PPT and Excel) and 2002-09-23.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Kirin.

Hi Kirin,

Word's version number after the 10.1.2 update should be 10.1.1 so obviously
something went wrong. My bet is that you moved files which the updater
needs to find before it can do its job. To fix this, you will have to
remove and reinstall Office as follows. And do not, in future, move the
files that Office installs; it will always cause problems.

The Remove Office tool is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X
CD. Install it and run it. Now reinstall Office X using the installer on
the CD or do a Drag & Drop to the Applications folder. Also don't forget to
install any Value Pack items you need. When you've finished, you'll need to
download (<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/>) and install the Office X
10.1.2, 10.1.4 (includes 10.1.3) and 10.1.5 updaters.

For the most trouble-free installation, run Disk Utility First Aid to repair
permissions after you remove Office, after you reinstall it and after you
install all the updates. To repair permissions go to Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities; open up Disk Utility; select your hard disk and
click the First Aid tab and then the button to "Repair Disk Permissions".

Note: Before doing the removal, you may want to back up some files for
later reinstallation. Consider these:

Normal Template
Your custom templates
Word Settings (10)
Settings files for the other Office apps
AutoCorrect List (called Office ACL English or whatever language)
Custom Dictionary

Hope this helps.

Okay, it's been reinstalled and all is working now.
Thank-you very much for all your help! I had a project that was kinda
urgent. Thank-you for the list of files to backup, too... I'd never
have known ^^;
Kirin.
