workaround for not being able to filter with a "contains" on fields that use lookup table

This is very very strange to me. I have a multi-level outline code I
am using for "Performer" which is actually our organization-based
Portfolio:

org.dept.div.group

When grouping by this outline code in PWA, I want to be able to give
Directors the ability to filter for "contains org.dept.div" and I keep
getting an error indicating that type of filter cannot be used with a
field using a lookup table.

Any workarounds anyone????
