WORKAROUND - Install problem with Microsoft FrontPage 2000

Problem Description:

The install of Microsoft FrontPage 2000 under Windows XP will fail when
opening FrontPage 2000 for the first time with an error dialog showing:

Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Personal Web Server

When this error-dialog is dismissed and you finish the install process, all
appears normal until you try to load FrontPage. At that point, a dialog
appears indicating that FrontPage cannot find the required integration-DLL
support required to work with Windows XP-SP2. FrontPage will then
close automatically and you will be unable to enter the program.

Problem resolution:

There is a Post-SP2 Windows XP update to the Web-Folders interface.

This update can be found by reading the Microsoft KB Article 892211.

If this update is installed *before* you install Microsoft FrontPage 2000,
then the install of FrontPage 2000 will be unable to automatically integrate
itself with the Windows XP support that takes the place of Microsoft
Personal Web Server under Windows 98.

To work around this problem, avoid installing the KB892211 update until
*after* Microsoft FrontPage 2000 is installed.

Corrective Action Required:

The KB892211 Web-Folders Update has not been properly
regression-tested with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 when installed
under Windows XP-SP2. I suspect that the KB892211 Web-Folders
update changes the Registry information-pathway CLSID that is
required for the FrontPage 2000 Installation-CD to properly integrate
itself into WXP-SP2's synthetic-support for Microsoft Personal Web
Server. As a result, the install-routines for Microsoft FrontPage
2000 are unable to properly integrate FP2K with WXP-SP2.

Either the KB892211 Update patch will require modification to ensure
compatibility with FP2K or the application-compatibility-database in
WXP-SP2 will have to be updated to accommodate the above situation.

Best I can do for now. <tm>
