Background: The ISP for one of my accounts goes down from time, usually
overnight or for a couple daytime hours. When this happens, Entourage 2004
email is stuck trying to access the ISP university server for several
minutes before it puts up a failed operation dialogue and the only way I've
found to regain control is to quit Entourage and re-launch.

1. Without removing an Office 2004 email account and having to re-enter all
the account specs, how can one temporarily disable it or just remove it from
the send-receive options? (Rather than the "Send and Receive All" default, I
can go under Send & Receive and select each account that I know is
operational for handling incoming and outgoing messages but that is time
consuming)

2. If an ISP's server cannot be accessed, how can one quit a frozen
send-receive for an account without having to quit the whole Entourage
program?

Respectfully, Norm

That happens to me occasionally, but I never crash. What happens when you
click "Stop"?

In Accounts, just uncheck include this account in my Send & Receive All
schedule. You might be able to do this with an AppleScript.

When this happens, open the Activity Monitor and see if Entourage is showing
as hung. If it's hung or shows as not responding in red, then you can only
quit Entourage. If it's just in a state of perpetual downloading, then click
on the Stop button.

I find that when an account gets stuck downloading, I can enable Online
access for that account and use it to check mail. If I click on a few
messages, it will 'unstick' Entourage and downloads start as normal. Other
times I have to use tcpflow to find the offending message and delete it
online before I can download with Entourage again.

Thanks very much, Diane. Please see my comments and questions below.

Where (or when) do you find the "Stop" button in Entourage? Somehow, I miss
it when I look through the menubar and pulldown menus and I can't find
reference in the listings for "stop" in Entourage Help.

Ah! I don't know how I could have missed that. Now that check box was
right before my eyes when I opened up the problem account before posting my
query. Unchecking it is simple and quick. Thanks!

Are you referring to the Activity Monitor "Quit Process" button or something
in Entourage, itself?

It's in the Progress window.

In the Activity Monitor. Select to quit or force quit there. It shouldn't be
hung. Let me know if this is the case.
