10.4.7 update now hangs Entourage

M

Marc Monaro

Greetings!

In the past week or so, I've had to update a number of our users to 10.4.7
in an effort to stay consistent with our OS environment.

A number of our users are now complaining that every time Entourage (2004
11.2.5) syncs with the Exchange server, they're plagued with the spinning
ball of death. To the point where they can't do anything but wait.

Has anyone seen this behavior in 10.4.7?
Any clues as to why this is happening?

Thanks!
M

I haven't seen that here and I don't know what's causing this :-\
You can try repairing permissions on the drives though (with
DiskUtility).

All I can say is that 10.4.8 has been extremely beneficial for a lot of
issues here. You might want to try it to see if things get back to
normal then,

Open Activity Monitor and select CPU tab then sort columns by %CPU. I've
experience similar slowdowns and find that the Microsoft Database daemon is
running at almost 100%. I don't know if this is tied to Spotlight searching
or not. The daemon is tied to Entourage syncing to Spotlight caches.

Hi Corentin!
I think I've repaired permissions more times than I can count. I have also
deleted and recreated the users entire "Microsoft User Data" directory.
Still nothing. Spinning ball every time Entourage syncs. And it's only when
Entourage syncs with our Exchange server.

We stopped at 10.4.7 because of some quirky things happening in 10.4.8 with
our Mac's in Active Directory. So for now, 10.4.7 is the standard for us.

Got anything else?

Hi Diane!

I have everything unchecked in System Preferences/Spotlight. Spotlight
should not be scanning a thing. Correct? What's up with this DB daemon? Can
I delete it?

Thanks!

In System Preferences -> Spotlight click on the Privacy tab. Now drag in
your Identity folder. Spotlight indexing is done from the files in
~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Microsoft/Entourage.

The Microsoft Database Daemon allows the Reminder to work even if all MS
applications are closed. The daemon is actually used all the time to access
the Database. Even Word uses it. This is why you need to Quit Notifications
and/or the Microsoft Database daemon when you install MS updates. It could
also interfere with backup applications.

You only need one Microsoft Database daemon. If you have more than one,
delete all and the next time you open an Office application a new one will
be created. More info on the daemon:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html>

The Microsoft AU daemon stands for 'Microsoft Automatic Update demon'. This
daemon runs in the background and will notify you of future Office updates.
For example, You can use AutoUpdate manually when you want to check for
updates, or you can set AutoUpdate to check for updates automatically on a
regular schedule. You'll find AutoUpdate under Help in the Entourage menu
bar.

Making sure Spotlight doesn't scan the MUD folder, as Diane suggested,
could help. What puzzles me is that it happened only after you updated
to 10.4.8 :-\

You use Active Directory on your Mac ?? That's something I haven't tried
(I'm not ready to give control over my Mac to our Computer support here
:-> ).

Does it automatically take care of the e-mail password as it does on a
PC with Outlook ???
It could indeed be an Active Directory issue. You could double-check
that the update didn't mess up your AD settings...
