2004 Database View Problem

Hello, I believe I am having the most unique database problem I have
ever encountered. This is very difficult to describe, so hopefully it
will come across clear.

Entourage 2004 opens without issue. However, when the main screen
appears, the folder view pane, and the message pane, are blank. The
calendar appears in the lower left hand corner, with dates.

In addition to the view problem, I cannot bring up the majority of the
menus. Nothing Happens when I select Preferences,or switch identities,

When I select Tools/accounts, the window comes up complete with tabs,
but where the account names are typically display, only an icon is
shown. There is no description. Also I cannot edit the account properties

Send/receive button works fine. I can bring up the progress bar, and it
even tells me when new messages are being downloaded.

The New message button works fine, but I cannot type. All formatting
options are grayed out. Even though I click in the blank message body, a
cursor never appears.

The Find feature brings up the search criteria dialog box, but again I
cannot type anything.

If I select View/Show mail folders only, a scroll bar disappears from
the folder View Pane. Unchecking it, makes it reappear.

Entourage must be force quit in order to be shut down.

When the user brought the issue to my attention, they were running
Entourage 11.0.0. In an effort to resolve the problem, I upgraded them
to 11.2.3.

I have run both the Database Rebuild, and the Database compact utility
without result. the verify Database tool, reports no problems.

I have made a Backup of the Identity Data, deleted the Microsoft User
Data folder, then deleted the Entourage Preferences file and two
entourage.plist files. I emptied the trash, then rebooted. After the
reboot, I launched entourage, and it ran the First Time Running wizard,
asking me to create account, import, etc.

by Not selecting any options, i was able to get inside the application,
and all of the above components started functioning, and the views were
restored. The Folder View was populated with the default folders, and
default welcome emails were viewable.

I then Created a second new Identity, and checked off the option to be
prompted to select identity at start up. I tested and was able to get
into both identities successfully.

I copied over the database file for the problem identity and overwrote
the default database. I launched Entourage, selected the respective
Identity, and the problem appeared. Exactly as described above. After I
force quit Entourage, I relaunch, select the second default identity,
and I get the default folders just fine.

So Based of the trouble shooting, the problem indeed resides with the
database.

I could be barking up the wrong tree, but It appears that the Database
is fully functional, but there is some kind of view instruction within
the database. And that instruction is causing the grief. Maybe telling
entourage to use a font that has been deleted.

So I have several questions. The first, and most obvious, is does anyone
have any ideas?

Next, is there any way to do a formal "import" on an Entourage 2004
database. The Import command only gives me Entourage X as the most
recent version. All information I have found online suggests that the
only way to import on is to copy it into the Microsoft User Data folder.

Is there any other application that can read the entourage database?
Maybe I can import the database into Thunderbird or Eudora, then import
it back into Entourage.

Thank you in advance for any help!!

Under File->Import you can select to import a .rge file. This won't get all
your data, but does contain most of your data and is easy to import.

Any text editor should be able to read the database. It's working with the
data that is difficult.

Don't forget Apple's Mail app. Let us know if this helps solve your problem.

Well my fiasco has finally come to an end.

After many hours of trial and error. I was convinced the problem was a
corrupt database. As one last ditch effort, I copied the database over
to a "known good" Mac with a working copy of Office 2004. THe problem
went away.

Completely desperate, I decided to upgrade the OS on the problem Mac,
and the Entourage View was restored.

Not sure what went wrong to begin with, but I am just glad it is fixed.

Cheers!
