2004 Sync with Palm

I

Ignat Solzhenitsyn

Hi everyone

Sorry in advance if there is a blindingly obvious answer to this:

Having installed Office 2004, I now wish to sync my Palm with my new
Entourage 2004 (into which I have imported my identities from Entourage X).
However, I do not yet wish to delete Office X identites, or indeed Office X
from my machine. Short of deleting Office X entirely, how can I get my
Entourage conduit to sync my Palm data with my 2004 identity, rather than my
X identity? (Is there any sense in installing the Handheld Sync Installer
on the 2004 CD? I have not done so yet, since that installer seems to be
identical to the handheld sync installer for Entourage X.) Any advice would
be much appreciated.

Hi, Ignat

Yes, you should use install the Handheld Sync Installer with a custom
install if you chose not to install it from the CD. (Tip: do an Easy Install
and install everything. There's no longer a Value Pack and they've cut the
huge Clip Art and Additional Templates down to much, much smaller versions
-and got rid of the Assistants - there will be downloads form MacTopia
available in due course. So it's all a very reasonable size.) You will then
find the Handheld Sync Installer in the Additional Tools folder in
Microsoft Office 2004. Launch it, and in 5 seconds or so the new Conduit
will be installed.

Entourage 2004 has a new database structure, so it needs new Handheld
conduits. The new ones are much faster - an "Overwrite" complete sync takes
me about 30 seconds, and regular syncs about 3 seconds!

Hi Paul

Thanks, as always, for your help. I wanted to report that everything has
worked out per your advice, although, just for the record, I had a lot of
trouble with the conduit misbehaving apparently in response to my also
opening Entourage X (albeit not simultaneously with Entourage 2004). It
seems that each time after X was opened, the new conduit¹s settings
(³double-click to see²) could no longer me opened, let alone modified. Each
time I had to throw it away, re-install it, etc. But now it¹s all set as
long as, presumably, I never again open Entourage X, which would again cause
this problem, I am guessing.

Certainly it¹s nice that the new conduit is indeed a lot faster than the old
one for someone like me, with very large date- and address-books, it¹s
especially helpful.

One other question: it is apparent from reading earlier postings that there
is currently no conduit that would allow for the improved capabilities of
Palm OS 5.1 to be synced with Entourage 2004 (or indeed X), and vice versa.
(I am referring to such improvements on Palm¹s part as the long-overdue
multiple addresses; calendar categories; etc.) My question is who is
likely to release a conduit that will make it possible to take advantage of
these features? Would it be the next release from Microsoft of this
Handheld Sync Installer? Would it be PalmOne itself? Or are third parties
likely to fill the void? Just wondering if you have a sense of where this
is going.

I have loaded the Entourage conduit as mentioned above. but I have a
Tungsten T3. Is there any way to get Entourage to sync with this
handheld? It failed when I tried, and I got a dialogue box stating
that it was incompatible with the T3.

Hopefully I am missing something somewhere.
ps - i am still working on getting my Palm calendar into Entourage.
(or from iCal, for that matter) Any help along that line would be
greatly appreciated as well.

I was hoping to get everything in one consolidated program, but so far
Palm Desktop 4 has been the most stable (but, of course, doesn't have
email.) And why Entourage 2004 doesn't have it as an automatic import
(it's probably used much more than the others listed), I haven't the
foggiest idea. (Well, yes I do, but it wouldn't help anything to voice
it here!)

Thanks for any help you can offer-

Entourage 11.0.0 -- Mac OS 10.3.3
PowerBook G4 15-inch 1.25 GHz ³AluBook²
Palm OS 5.1 -- Palm Tungsten T3

If you did read my posting and Paul Berkowitz¹ reply, you will have noticed
that I too am using a T3. There is no problem to sync it with Entourage
2004, but you cannot yet (to my knowledge) sync the ³advanced² features of
T3 (Palm OS 5.1) such as dual addresses, etc. Briefly:
1. delete any old Entourage Conduit that may be residing on your machine
2. install the new Conduit from the Office 2004 CD; it¹s called Handheld
Sync Installer and it is in the Additional Tools folder of that CD.
3. open Hot Sync Manager, go to Conduit Settings, then double-click on the
Entourage Conduit and check the box at bottom that talks about ³new
handhelds².
4. As for migrating from Palm Desktop to Entourage, the very easiest way
would probably be to use Entourage¹s Import feature and to import from
³other programs², from which you then choose ³Claris Organizer² (which is
the antecedent of Palm Desktop). But this method is notoriously imprecise.
The best way to do it, although it will take a little more time, is to use
Paul Berkowitz¹s outstanding custom-designed scripts which will import your
data JUST the way you want to import it. I do not have the download address
handy, but you can see it elsewhere in this group or someone will let you
know.
5. One final tip once you¹ve installed the new conduit, try to avoid ever
opening Entourage X on your computer (assuming you have it), since that, in
my experience, corrupts the conduit and you have to re-install all over per
my earlier posting.

Good luck!

Hi Ignat,

Thanks for reminding me of all these things. I have bought Paul's
scripts, but right now am having a problem getting them to work. I
have written him, so I expect to have that taken care of soon. I did
get my T3 to put the Calendar info into Entourage, but there were many
errors, and, of course, no categories.

There just seems to be so much conflicting information about this
Syncing issue. If the conduit sync's some fields and not others, then
I wouldn't call that working. (Although it might be usuable). Do you
know of any list of the features that will not be sync'ed? Most
mention the second address, and "others". It is those "others" that
have me worried. It just would be nice to know exactly what to avoid.

Of course, the best solution would be to have a conduit that worked
with all of the Calendar/Contact information - perhaps in my next
life-

Thanks again,
Roy Wylie

Is Handheld Sync Installer available as a download or just with a
CD/paid version of Office 2004.

I am using the downloaded demo but plan to purchase.

To re-state a post I had on another thread, as a follow up to Paul¹s post:

Even the syncing via Bluetooth (on Bluetooth Palms) for the Entourage
conduit is also much faster. A Bluetooth sync of Entourage, Documents to go,
Acrobat Reader, Voice Memo, and Backup took 22 seconds. I think this was
significantly faster than before. (And, yes, I have lots and lots of data to
sync...)
