2008: MS News Server Newsgroup empty-cache ?

In Office 2004, I would control-click on the news server icon and choose
"Empty Cache" a couple times a year. I control-clicked today, but no such
option appeared.

Moved? No longer necessary?

They have removed a lot of the contextual menus. I have no clue as to why.
Just noticed this one myself.

On the plus side, I notice that the Microsoft Server Newsgroups to which I
subscribe now no longer require hitting the "More" button as frequently as
with 2004.

Back to the second part of my question: Is it no longer necessary to empty
the cache periodically? And where on a Mac and/or how are all those
newsgroup messages being saved?

Emptying the newsgroup cache doesn't really give you back much disk
space. You're not downloading every message. You're only downloading the
message headers. Even if you read a message I'm not so sure that it's
getting downloaded and stored with the cache but I could be wrong about
that.

If you were to empty the cache then you'd need to let the cache build up
again to mark all your old messages as read.

Hope this helps!

Question: *What is the name and location of the cache, please, so I can
check the size and see whether its growth is insignificant?
(I do open a lot of the messages for the several Microsoft Newsgroups to
which I subscribe.)

Good point, but when I was running Office 2004, on a couple occasions I got
dialogues warning of the server being at capacity. On those occasions, the
warning went away after I emptied the cache.

You'll find the Newsgroup Cache file here: /Users/<your user
folder>/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/.

Your local cache file has nothing to do with your newsgroup server's
status. The messages may have been coincidence or erroneous if your
cache was indeed the problem.

Hope this helps!

Well, only 4 KB of used space really indicates nothing whatsoever to worry
about.

Yes, indeed. Thank you very much.

but at some time this will need/should be emptied; also this raises
the questions.. where does the newsgroup msgs reside to be cleaned
out? while browsing the cache I would double click on some of them
and it would open a msg from from the past after I had disconnected
from the news group.. I would like to understand how I can clean out
old msgs and cache..

It really isn't necessary.

As messages are retired off the server they will also be deleted from the
newsgroup in Entourage, so you will never accumulate more than whatever the
server has set as the 'current' messages. This is typically around 3 months,
but for busy groups it can be set much lower.

and if I don't use/visit that newsgroup again? Doe that mean that the
messages are resident for ever?

I think Google keeps newsgroup messages around forever.

maybe.. but firefox lets me clear cache and personal info.. now back
to entourage.. I'm getting that there is not a method to find files
and clean them out.. in XP I can search on .tmp or .dbx and just
delete them.. anything similar I can do here?

This doesn't sound like an Entourage problem, but a system question. You can
use Spotlight to find files by type.

back to the original text.. how do we find the cache or messages...
is there a naming convention or file type that is used that I can
search on? Can I just delete old cache.. it looks like new ones are
always made... I was looking for my messages that in my inbox at the
file level structures... how/where does entourage keep messages? for
email and for newsgroups?

It's all kept in the 'Database' file, in the Office 2008/2004 Identities
folder inside the Microsoft User Data folder in your Documents folder.
Everything is in there.
