3.9GB Database

Hi all! I hope you can help me with this.

I have a 3.9GB database and lately Entourage X said that it cannot access
the database, suggesting that I rebuild it. I did as told, but Entourage
then reports the database has exceeded the 4GB limit and does not finish the
rebuild, even though I have plenty of free space in my hard drive.

When I did manage to rebuild and open the database (I don't know how, as I
am still puzzled with 3 or 4 'old databases' :-\) the database appears to be
corrupted: there are blank spaces in a given folder (i.e.: Inbox) and
highlighting a blank space returns an error message. If the preview pane is
on, the error becomes recursive and I have to force-quit. I have tried to
export each folder as MBOXes but some are missing messages. (I have not yet
tried using Barry Wainwright's Export Folders v1.1 script - Barry: I have
absolutely no clue as to how to interpret the innards of your script, so
does it just automate the 'drag & drop' process, or is there anything else
going on that could potentially help in 'fixing' the missing messages, such
as bypassing corrupt messages?)

I have read through all related threads in this newsgroup and I still can't
find an answer beyond repairing permissions and every conceivable and
recommended common sense fix. I must admit I should've paid attention to the
database limit warning, but procrastination won the battle (sorry!).

So my questions are:
1. If the 3.9GB database has empty space produced by the deletion of
messages, wouldn't it be logical to expect that the resulting database size
is perhaps just a little bit smaller than the 4GB limit?

2. Other than an advanced rebuild (which will not work because of the
database size limit, as explained above) is there any other way to get rid
of the blank spaces that return an error message when selected?

3. Are there any plans for an Office update to extend the database size
limit to, say, 6GB?

Thanks in advance for your help!

4GB is the current limit. Office 2004 will have an unlimited database size.
If all else fails, you can save the corrupt database until 2004 is released.

It sounds like you can still open Entourage so you could try reducing the
size of your database. See the Database page for ways to reduce.

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/database.html#Anchor-Reduce-17304

Right below "how to reduce" it explains the "old" files and what to do with
them. Other than taking up drive space it's not part of your problem.

This is great news! I will save the files and hopefully they may be "fixed"
with the new Entourage (crossing fingers!).

Thanks for the tip! I will do this.

Actually that's not true. There will be a limit, but it will be based on the
number of items in the database, not a fixed size.

How many items? Will there be a size limit for each item? If a database
already has more items than the item limit in Office 2004, will the database
be "usable"?
