4362 error - Database Utility doesn't fix

I'm using Entourage 11.1.0 on a 1.5 GHz 17" Powerbook running 10.3.9.

When using Entourage, I continue to regularly get "unkown error (4362)
occurred". I've followed the recommendations found at various places on
the web, ie. to repair Entourage via the Database Utility, however
despite following this procedure 3 or 4 times now, the problem
persists.

It seems to have something to do with some corrupt emails inside the
Junk E-Mail folder. I just can't delete these emails. I can't even see
them. The Junk E-Mail folder tells me there are 3 emails within it, but
when I click on the Junk E-Mail folder, I get a viewing pane with grey
background (as opposed to the usual white) with no visible emails.

Other junk emails that are added to the folder can be cleared as usual.
There are just three always left behind.

I thought I might delete the entire Junk E-Mail folder to solve the
problem, but Entourage doesn't let me delete the Junk E-Mail folder.

Is an upgrade to Tiger likely to fix all of this anyway?

The above problem has led to another annoyance I now have. Running the
Database Utility has caused all of these disk hungry backup folders in
my 'Office 2004 Identities' folder (steven>Documents>Microsoft User
Data>Office 2004 Identities). Now, when I launch Entourage, the main
window is named an annoying "Mail*Main Identity [Backed Up 4-18-2005
19:55]".

To try and solve, I've opened the 'Office 2004 Identities' folder and
deleted all but the most recent 'Main Identity' folder, all but one
having the words 'Backed Up' and date and time added to the name. So,
having only one remaining Main Identity folder, I renamed it 'Main
Identity' (with none of the added words, date, time).

However, when I launch Entourage, an extra folder within 'Office 2004
Identities' is automatically created, and this folder is named
"Mail*Main Identity [Backed Up 4-18-2005 19:55]". In the folder are
three files named Mailing Lists, Rules, and Signatures. The Entourage
main window reflects the name "Mail*Main Identity [Backed Up 4-18-2005
19:55]". I can't get rid of it. Any tips?

Many thanks...Steven

First, upgrading to Tiger is most unlikely to fix your problems.

Second, you can't delete the Junk Mail folder in Entourage 2004 - it's a
'special' folder, like the Inbox.

Next, if you have a 'backup' database open (as evidenced by the title of the
main browser window), you are looking at a pre-rebuild database! -
Entourage, as part of the rebuild process, backs up the original database in
case the rebuild fails and you need to go back to how things were.

Choose 'switch Identity...' from the entourage menu, and choose a database
called just "Main Identity". Is that any better?

If this has fixed the problem, simply delete all the other 'memory hungry'
copies in there.

Thanks Barry.

Well, I followed your directions and unfortunately, no, it hasn't fixed
the problem.

At least you brought the existence of the Identities feature to my
attention. Either I hadn't seen this before, or I've forgotten it was
there. Handy.

Anyway, I started again and ran the Database Utility. I ran the verify
feature first, and yes, it said there were problems which required
fixing. So I began the repair process.

During 'Step 3/3: Copying Data to new database...', I noticed in the
Result window the following message "An error occurred while attempting
to rebuild your database. An I/O error occurred."

So maybe that's a clue to the problem? Perhaps the Database Utility
isn't fixing the problem because it's experiencing an error, and maybe
that error relates to what's continually causing the 4362 error ???

I do have a lot of data in Entourage, mainly in terms of retention of
emails, especially in the 'Sent' folder. A few years' worth. Is there a
limit to the amount of data Entourage can handle I wonder? The Database
files within the Office 2004 Identities folder are about a Gb in size.

Any further tips appreciated.

Further to this continuing problem I'm having, an Apple Store rep
suggested rebuilding Entourage (something like that) by launching
Entourage and at the same time holding down the Control or Option or
Command keys, or some combination of them, he wasn't certain which it
was.

Can anyone tell me more about this in terms of what it does, what does
it do differently to, Database Utility, and waht the actual key or key
combination is?

Many thanks

Holding down the Option key while launching Entourage (while also possibly
causing the Finder window to close) will bring up the Database Utility so
that you can rebuild your database. It does not do anything different.

4362 is an internal error (eFILE_MGR_ACCESSING_INVALID_BLOCK) related to the
database file manager (which also owns errors 4353 - 4365) meaning the
database has references to a block that isn't allocated. Have you tried both
types of rebuilding?

The limit to the size of the Entourage 2004 database is currently in terms
of objects (usually two+ per e-mail message), not physical size (though we
use the standard apple file routines to access the DB, which caps at max
UInt64) -- 2 million. See http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/size.html

Thanks Nathan. When you ask 'have you tried both types of rebuilding?',
I think I've only tried one type, ie. rebuilding the database with
Database Utility. What's the other?

I tried launching Entourage whilst holding down Option, and as you
point out, Database Utility launches, which is the same as what I've
already tried.

He meant whether you had done a Compact & a Rebuild. In previous versions,
those two operations were actually called Typical Rebuild & Advanced
Rebuild.

Thanks for clarifying Mickey.

I hadn't done the Compact before, so I did, that followed by another
rebuild.

Well, something's been fixed it seems. I no longer have the problem
with the Junk Mail folder, and what seemed to be the associated 4362
message.

The problem that hasn't disapperaed though is when I try to import
Entourage data with iCal, iCal tells me that my Office database is
damaged. So I went back to the Database Utility and ran the Verify
option, and sure enough, I'm told that the database is damaged.

The 'Database Utility.log' simply says 'Starting Scan, Scan Ended' so
that doesn't give too much away.

Any other suggestions very welcome, and thanks all for tips so far.
I've made some progress.

Cheers

Although the Rebuilding engine of Entourage 2004 seems absolutely
first-rate, the Verifier seems to be a bit dubious, sometimes giving false
positives like this - saying your database is damaged even after you've just
repaired it and nothing actually is amiss. iCal (what's it its business,
anyway?) is surely just running the verifier, since iCal wouldn't have the
first idea about the Entourage database structure or integrity on its own.
No one but Microsoft know the secrets of the Entourage database. If you're
in Tiger, just export the Entourage events from your All Events custom view
(in Calendar area Views) and drag them into iCal. That may miss event notes
(as I think the iCal Import you can't do also does) and perhaps some other
properties. If so, you can use my Sync Entourage-iCal 2 [TIGER] script free
in Demo mode to get everything. You can find it at

Although the Rebuilding engine of Entourage 2004 seems absolutely
first-rate, the Verifier seems to be a bit dubious, sometimes giving false
positives like this - saying your database is damaged even after you've just
repaired it and nothing actually is amiss.

There are a lot of relations stored in the database, and the integrity check
that we perform catches some but not all improper relations or data.
Furthermore, an [Adv.] Rebuild will correct some but not all improper
relations or data, and a set that is distinct from the verifier's. Thus,
there will be situations where the verifier says that something's amiss, and
a rebuild will report success, but the verifier will still report
something's wrong. Similarly, the rebuilder may fix some subtle problem that
the verifier didn't notice.

When it gets down to it, we try to make sure we're not introducing those
problems programmatically, and that, when external influences do (e.g.,
hardware failure, viruses, user error), we recover as much as possible.
