4363 error and problems rebuilding

P

Patricia A Warwick

Error 4363 occurred during send/receive. I attempted to recover from
this by doing an advanced rebuild. But when the advanced rebuild
started I could not see any reference to advanced rebuild in the dialog
box that displayed the status so I thought I must have made a mistake
in selecting advanced (It would have been nice if I had been asked to
confirm what type of rebuild I wanted) so I clicked the CANCEL button.
Shortly after that I got a message that the rebuild had completed. I
decided to retry the operation being careful to click the advance radio
button. The rebuild proceeded the same way ... no feedback that it was
an advanced rebuild. It finished in about the same time ... a few
minutes. The original database was around 370 Mb, but this rebuilt
database was around 150Mb. When I checked the contents a LOT of the
messages were missing. Could this because I CANCELled the first
rebuild? I am afraid to retry the rebuild because I do not trust it.

Did you make a backup copy before rebuilding? You should always make a
backup copy BEFORE a rebuild.

I would be guessing to know what happened during your rebuild process. If
you have the original you can try the rebuild again on a copy. Also look in
the file for the "old" files. Remove the "old" and after making a backup,
try the rebuild again.

Old files are named:
Entourage X: "Old Database Cache" and "Old Database"

Note: You should also try a typical rebuild first before a complex rebuild.

Often error messages that are close in number have similar solutions. Check
out the fixes for 4362 error.

I most certainly made a backup copy before rebuilding althoug the
rebuild also makes a backup copy so it is redundant.
I also was able to restore the database without problems but my
question remains ... why did all the emails get deleted. Reading the
warnings about the advanced rebuild led me to expect that some
newsgroups and other folders might be removed, but there was nothing
about the POP email that did disappear.

BTW, Immediately after posting this query, I started to get spam/virus
email that I never got before. This is because I made the mistake of
entering my home email address because other support groups use
that to forward a message when a reply to a message is entered. In my
ignorance I thought that would happen here ... I did not think that the
address would be listed as it was. That is my fault, but do you know if
there is a way I can delete the original posting .. or is it too late?

Sorry, no you can't remove messages once posted.

It's not redundant if the rebuild goes bad.

If a database is badly corrupted and the rebuild goes bad as it seems yours
did, then mail can get lost. That's why it's not a good idea to rebuild on a
weekly basis as some like to do. It could also mean the messages are there
but a setting like view unread only or flagged only could be hiding the
messages.

My previous post to this topic disappeared ...

I only attempted the advanced rebuild after having tried the typical
rebuild and still encountering errors. I did not expect it to delete
messages because the warning was only about newslists and IMAP
messages which did not apply. I did create a backup (in addition to the
one that the rebuild created) and was able to recover from the deleted
messages BUT it worries me that this happened.

I also asked in the lost message about deleting my original posting
because once I posted it I joined the vast majority of computer users
receiving gobs of spam messages. Before I made the mistake of adding
my email address to the original posting I received NONE. Can someone
delete my message?

No, "anonymous"* is correct. Entourage never touches the original Database
file when doing rebuilds. It makes a copy, which is what it rebuilds, and
renames the original "Old Database" without doing anything at all to it.
Nothing can happen to "Old Database", since nothing at all is attempted on
it.

*Really! It's not very nice to be helping anonymous placeholders. Please use
your own name, but disguise your email address however you wish.

I beg to differ with you. There are times when the rebuild goes bad and the
database doubles in size and will not rebuild. Having a backup of data is
always a wise thing.
