A read/write error has occurred (-40)

I have a Entourage X database that is 2 GB. It will no longer open and
gives me the error message of :

"Compacting failed. A read/write error has occurred (-40)."

Error -40 is a positioning error ("tried to position before start of file").
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean, or running
"fsck -y" in single-user mode.

It wants me to try to rebuild the database, but neither the advanced nor
the typical works. Same error as above. I have tried this and it did not
fix my problem. Has anyone else seen this? Is the data lost or is there
anything I can do to get it back?

Thanks,
John Briles

Could it be that your version of Entourage X is an "early" one? The 2 GB
limit was pushed up to 4 GB since 10.1.2, I think. So if you haven't I'd
suggest you should download the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updates from
Mactopia and apply them. Repair the Permissions after that and then retry
compacting the database. It *might* be a solution.
