Accounts / Rules problem

Never used a news group b4, so forgive me I don¹t know what the protocol
is. HOWEVA...if you have an answer for this vexing question that I have
not found any answers to for many months, I would so appreciate it.
In Entourage, I have two accounts, from two different servers, Earthlink
([email protected]) and Discotech (but with my own domain,
[email protected]). Earthlink is also who I pay for my cable modem
connection.
Ze problem:
I cannot get the Entourage rules to work with my email account
[email protected]. They work perfectly with my [email protected]
account.
Does Entourage rules only apply to one account? I've made the citizenreno
account the default account, and that didn't work either. Is it because of
using earthlink as the server plus domain? Are these questions superfluous?
I just get flooded with b*llsh*t every day in the citizenreno acct, and the
spamblocker is bulloney since Earthlink requires a csv doc to import my 4500
addresses and Entourage doesn't save the contact book in that method, so
earthlink will send back my incoming msgs until the senders are in my
address book...[asked Earthlink how to deal with this and I get uninformed
answers from jolly fools]
blah blah,
Reno

There are separate panes in the rules dialog for POP3 mail & IMAP mail (and
news, outgoing & exchange) but within each type of account, those rules
apply to all accounts of that type.

You could save the addresses as tab delimited text, open that in Excel and
then re-save as CSV.

Do Outgoing rules apply to IMAP accounts?

Yes, they do, but there may be some issues if your outgoing rule is set to
move a message to a folder rather than just apply a category or something
similar. And it may also depend on your version of Entourage.

What do your outgoing rules do, and what version of Entourage?

Sorry: Entourage 2004.

My Outgoing rules say, for example:

If any criteria are met
Any to recipient contains [email protected]
Any to recipient contains [email protected]
Set Project A
Copy message xxx
Set Category B

where [email protected] and xxx.zzz.net are the recipient's email addresses,
A is a Project name, xxx is the folder for email to and from the
particular correspondent, and B is a category.

The Enabled box is checked, and the "Do not apply other rules..." box
is not checked.

The Outgoing rules apparently don't actually do anything, however, to
IMAP messages. That is, the sent message will be in the Sent Items
folder, but it will have no Project and no Category, and there will be
no copy in the xxx folder - or any other. The POP messages are all
handled as wished: Project set to A, Category set to B, copy in the xxx
folder.

I tried everything I could think of: made the criteria "any" rather
than "all" (even when there was only one) and "contains" rather than
"is"; and used the actual email address rather than the name. I even
reselected the folder after clicking "Choose folder..." to be sure I
was selecting the correct folder. I used Copy rather than Move, because
I gather that Move is problematic for IMAP messages.

I have corresponding rules set for the same correspondents in the POP
and IMAP tabs - with "From" criteria, of course. I have discovered that
if I add an "Any To recipient" criterion to the IMAP rule, I can select
the IMAP message in the Sent Items folder and select Apply Rule. This
shows me the rules from the IMAP tab. If I then select the
corresponding IMAP rule for that correspondent, it applies it--sets the
Project and copies the message to the designated folder. (I
deliberately do not set the Category in the IMAP rule, so that I can
tell which rule was applied.) This tells me that the "Then" part of the
rule is at least syntatically correct.

Sorry for this long answer, but I just wanted to be clear about what I
have tried. Obviously, I have yet to try the right thing.

Thanks for any help.

Thankyou for your response, Barry.
Two questions:
1) Newsgroup protocol:
Am I suppossed to write back to the whole community, or to you individually?
I suspect that the whole envelope in the server column here on my Entourage
X window means a Œpersonal¹ email, and the 1/2 faded envelope signifies the
newsgroup? (not that I grasp the underlying difference, but I am concerned
about keeping my server clear so I only should delete from server those
messages in the newsgroup window that carry full envelopes - correct?
2) I neglected to mention its Entourage X in question and its incoming
message rules. Both accounts are POP, and only the one account, the one
with the domain from the server I pay for cable internet, Earthlink, will
react to the rules. Making one or the other the default account did not do
anything.
I¹ve looked at Entourage help pages are you saying that there is an
explanation of this in there and I can¹t find it? Cause I really cannot
find it.
OY.
Peace,
reno

Most posters prefer that you reply to the newsgroup so that everyone can
benefit from the discussion.

No, actually, it means that the message is either downloaded fully to the
computer or hasn't been downloaded fully (more likely to happen with large
messages or messages you haven't yet read). You can't delete messages from
the newsgroup, but you can clear the cache by Control-clicking the
"Microsoft News Server" server entry and choosing "Empty Cache" from the
contextual menu that appears.
